The French finance minister explained that the postponed 2025 budget bill will target a deficit slightly above 5% in order to protect growth. The fiscal deficit target for next year, at above 5%, is the same as that of the previous government. However, it still represents a decrease from this year, as the deficit is expected to widen to more than 6% of GDP.
He pointed out that "we need to amend the (budget) bill to achieve a good budget, with a deficit slightly above 5% to protect growth, as reducing the deficit must come through reducing public spending and not through taxes."
He pointed out that any tax increases should be very limited, and from this standpoint we will consult with all political parties in the French parliament, so that the discussions contribute to the government's budget proposals.
