The Russian Ministry of Finance revealed that the budget deficit worsened to reach 1.3 percent of GDP during the first two months of 2025, equivalent to 2.7 trillion rubles ($ 31.45 billion), in light of the continued high levels of government spending.
According to the ministry, the early increase in spending is due to advance payments for government contracts, indicating that these expenditures will not affect the achievement of the stated target of a deficit of 0.5 percent of GDP by the end of 2025. In comparison, the deficit during the same period in 2024 amounted to 1.13 billion rubles, or 0.6 percent of GDP, reflecting the acceleration of government spending this year.
