Official data showed that Tunisia's GDP grew by 2.4 percent in the first quarter of 2022, on an annual basis.
Tunisian Institute of Statistics (governmental) revealed that the GDP grew by 0.7 percent compared to the last quarter of 2021.
Tunisia is suffering from an economic and financial crisis, exacerbated by the repercussions of the health crisis and the Russian-Ukrainian war, which led to an increase in the prices of basic materials.
The International Monetary Fund expects Tunisia's economic growth to slow to 2.2 percent in 2022, from 3.1 percent in 2021. The National Institute of Statistics attributed the GDP growth to an increase in the added value of the agriculture and fisheries sector by 3.3 percent on an annual basis. The textile and clothing sector also grew by 10.8 percent, and the agricultural and food industries by 9.6 percent; And the mechanical and electrical industries sector by 4.1 percent, and the chemical industries by 2.1 percent. On the other hand, the added value of the non-manufacturing industries sector shrank, as a result of a decline in the production of the oil and natural gas extraction sector by 9.5 percent and the construction sector by 12.2 percent.
