Former Mauritanian Economy Minister Sidi Ould Tah was elected president of the African Development Bank (the continent's largest lender), succeeding Nigeria's Akinwumi Adesina, who had gone through six rounds of voting. Ould Tah needed only three rounds to win the prestigious position, securing a landslide victory with 76.18 percent of the vote.
Five candidates from South Africa, Senegal, Zambia, Chad, and Mauritania competed to succeed Adesina, who will step down next September after serving the maximum two five-year terms.
In his campaign to lead the bank, Ould Tah pledged to strengthen regional financial institutions, affirm Africa's financial independence in global markets, use population growth as an engine of development, and build climate-resilient infrastructure.
