Green Economy in the Arab World ... "The Cornerstone" for Sustainable Development

  • 17 October 2017

The issue of green economy in the Arab world is not an option; it is a binding necessity for economic and environmental security and a prerequisite for comprehensive and sustainable development. In terms of water security, water scarcity and water stress are characteristic of all Arab countries. In terms of food security, more than 80% of fresh water is consumed in the agricultural sector in the Arab countries with a high rate of waste, pollution is increasing and the impact on the possibility of continuing to produce healthy food is increasing. In terms of energy security, there is a consensus on the importance of transition to renewable energy, as fossil energy is depleted, as well as the reduction of pollution from conventional energy. As for environmental security, the Arab region is one of the most affected regions in the world in the climate change. This also applies to the other sectors of industry, transport, infrastructure and buildings, investment and labor markets and the need for a green approach to it, and the requirements involved.

This study aims to urge the Arab countries to accelerate the pace of transition to a green economy by studying the various elements, aspects, problems and related requirements in light of the reality of Arab economies and their trends, and the Arab and international experiences that can be utilized.

We hope that this contribution will constitute a new addition to the Arab Economic Library, which will contribute to enhancing awareness of the real and vital needs of current and future Arab development.
