Apple lost its 10-year legal battle in the European Union after the highest court ruled to recover up to 13 billion euros ($14.4 billion) in Ireland's arrears in taxes from the tech giant.

In 2014, the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, opened an investigation into Apple's tax payments in Ireland, the headquarters of the EU tech giant. In 2016, the Commission ordered Dublin to recover up to €13 billion ($14.4 billion) in back taxes from the company on the grounds that it had received illegal tax benefits from Ireland over two decades.
