According to government data, the total population of Japan has declined for the fifteenth consecutive year, falling by more than half a million people as the population continues to ageing and the number of births declines. Births in Japan reached a record low of 730,000 last year.

The death toll of 1.58 million last year was also a record. The population of Japan stood at 124.9 million as of January 1 January.

Data from the Ministry of Home Affairs showed that an 11 percent increase in the number of foreign residents helped their numbers surpass 3 million for the first time. They now make up nearly 3 percent of the total population and are mostly of working age from 15 to 64 years.
