China has issued its official guidelines for generative AI services in one of the first global moves to regulate advanced technology.

The rules, led by China's Cyberspace Administration, the country's top cyber supervisor, will take effect from August 15, 2023. Of the 24 items, there are requirements for platform providers to conduct a security review and register their services with the government, as stipulated in a draft version released in April.

The final guidelines state that providers of synthetic AI tools abroad if aimed at Chinese residents must also adhere to the set of rules. On the other hand, if the tools developed by China only serve overseas users, they will not be subject to the guidelines.
