The International Monetary Fund mission to Tunisia revealed that there were fruitful discussions regarding reaching a new agreement within the framework of the Extended Fund Facility to support the economic policies and reforms of the authorities in Tunisia. The mission noted that discussions will continue over the coming weeks with the aim of reaching an agreement at the expert level.
According to the Fund, the Tunisian authorities and IMF experts have made good progress in identifying the main parameters of policies and reforms that a program with the Fund can support, the Fund praised the openness of the Tunisian government and the social partners to constructive dialogue on the implementation of a socially sensitive and pro-growth reform program.
The Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the Fund, Jihad Azour, visited Tunisia and met with President Said and Prime Minister Najla Bouden. A group of ministers announced that the government will start reviewing the policy of subsidies for some basic items.
After his meeting with the official of the Fund, President Kais Saied stressed the need to introduce major reforms, taking into account the social dimensions, he stressed that there are a number of rights that human beings enjoy, such as the right to health and the right to education, that are not subject to profit and loss criteria.
