The unemployment rate in the Egyptian labor market rose to 7.5 percent during the third quarter of 2021, compared to 7.3 percent in the second quarter of 2021.

The number of the unemployed until the end of the third quarter, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, was about 2.21 million, an increase of 96,000 over the second quarter of the same year. The reasons for the high unemployment rate are due to the high influx of new graduates into the labor market, during the months of August and September 2021.

The unemployment rate among males reached 5.9 percent of the total males in the labor force, compared to 5.7 percent in the previous quarter, while the female unemployment rate reached 15.3 percent, compared to 15.2 percent in the second quarter.

The urban unemployment rate decreased to 11.4 percent of the total urban labor force, down from 11.2 percent on a quarterly basis, while rural unemployment recorded 4.4 percent from 4.1 percent in the second quarter. The percentage of the unemployed with intermediate and university degrees decreased, reaching 80.3 percent of the total unemployed, compared to 81.7 percent in the previous quarter.
