Rise of the Qatari Trade Balance Surplus

The Qatari merchandise trade balance achieved a surplus of about 46.4 billion riyals (12.74 billion dollars) during the second quarter of this year, compared to a surplus of 15.5 billion riyals during the same period in 2020. The value of Qatari exports exceeded 71 billion riyals, representing an increase of 33.3 billion riyals, or 88.1 percent, as exports for the second quarter of last year amounted to 37.8 billion riyals.

The Qatari Planning and Statistics Authority attributed the main reason for the increase in total exports to the increase in the exports of mineral fuels, lubricants and similar materials, with a value of 29.1 billion riyals, or 98.7 percent, and chemicals and their products by 3.8 billion riyals, or 100 percent, and manufactured goods, classified mainly according to Article 0.7 billion riyals, or 62.1 percent.

Exports witnessed a decrease in raw materials, excluding fuel, by 42.1 percent, and machinery and transport equipment by 14.0 percent. While the value of Qatari imports rose to about 24.8 billion riyals, an increase of 11.2 percent, compared to the second quarter of last year, which amounted to 22.3 billion riyals, an increase of 800 million riyals, or 3.1 percent, compared to the first quarter of this year.
