Mauritanian Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal revealed that his government, during the past year, was able to provide more than 20 thousand permanent jobs, despite the negative consequences of the outbreak of the Corona pandemic locally and internationally.
Ould Bilal informed the Mauritanian Parliament that the outcome of the created jobs exceeded the expectations and commitments made, pointing out that “among the jobs provided by the government are 6 thousand jobs in the field of education, 1140 jobs in public administration, and 2000 jobs in the fields of transport, bakeries and hotels, in addition to thousands of opportunities in multiple government sectors."
According to official data, the unemployment rate in Mauritania is 11 percent, but the International Labor Organization says it is about 30 percent.
The government affirms that it has completed a number of projects that have had a positive impact on the workers' situation, among them the establishment of the National Council for Social Dialogue, which was recently created and entrusted with the tasks of supervising representative elections, discussing and proposing a minimum wage, the percentage of contribution to the Social Security Fund and the deduction ceiling and overseeing the national plan to combat child labor and forced labor. The government also worked on issuing some regulatory texts that apply the labor code, where the internal organization of the regional labor inspectorates was revised, which made it possible to separate the agencies in charge of settling labor disputes from those charged with oversight, in order to avoid conflicts of interest.
