The UAE maintained its top position in the Arab world in the "Global Innovation Index" for 2019, making progress in its overall ranking within the index by two ranks to take the 36th place in the world.

The UAE has continued its advanced performance in innovation inputs, one of the main components of the Global Innovation Index, ranked 24th globally - superior to leading countries in the fields of development and innovation such as Italy, Spain and China – and ranked 58th in the Innovation Output Component.

UAE also registered a high performance and significant improvement in a number of axis in the Global Innovation Index structure, notably the human capital and research, infrastructure, creative outputs and institutions.

The “Global Innovation Index” classifies countries annually on the basis of their innovative capacity, and this year's index measures the innovative performance of 129 countries representing the largest share of the global GDP. The index was calculated on the basis of detailed measures of innovation inputs and outputs, including 80 sub-indices to provide insight into different areas of innovation, particularly the institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market development, business development, knowledge and technology output, and creative output.
