The United Arab Emirates topped the list of fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the Middle East and North Africa.
The “Emirates e-Commerce Report”, published in cooperation between “Dubai Economy” and “Visa”, shows that the UAE has achieved maturity in terms of both consumers and traders, thanks to the continued innovation in digital adoption, and the growing numbers of consumers interested in technology, in addition to the presence of an appropriate environment that fosters the growth of the emerging companies in the UAE and the Emirate of Dubai in particular.
The UAE is the most developed market in the MENA region, which is one of the fastest growing e-commerce markets in the world and is expected to reach AED 59 billion in 2019 and achieve a growth rate of 23% on annual basis during the period from 2018 to 2022.
The government's adoption of e-commerce payments on platforms, such as Dubai Smart City, along with the phenomenal growth in other categories, such as fast service restaurants and transport sector, are considered the main reasons of the UAE maintaining its first rank in the e-commerce market.
