Tourism revenues in Tunisia jumped to $1.36 billion by the end of 2018, with a record number of visitors reaching 8.3 million, representing a strong recovery for this vital sector, with tourism accounting for 8 percent of Tunisia's GDP.
The return of Europeans tourists would give the economy an important boost. Europe's major tourism companies began to return to Tunisia last year, after being away for three years following the attack on a beach in Sousse resulting the killing of 39 tourists and another separate attack on the Bardo National Museum in Tunis, leaving behind 21 people killed. Tourism revenues in 2018 rose 45 percent from 2017 to 4.09 billion dinars ($1.36 billion), as per the Tunisian Central Bank.
The number of tourists jumped to 8.3 million from 7 million in 2017, visitors from Algeria, Russia and the European countries filled the hotels. Tunisia expects the number of tourists to reach 9 million for the first time in 2019.
