Mohamed Choucair, the President of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture in Lebanon, received the British Trade Commissioner for the Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Mr. Simon Penney, at the headquarters of the Beirut and Mount Lebanon Chamber and discussed ways to activate economic relations between the two countries.
Choucair praised the United Kingdom's interest in developing economic relations with Lebanon, pointing to "the interest of the Lebanese private sector to strengthen cooperation with his British counterpart," calling for "to tap the potential of both sides to create business partnerships on more than one level."
"The trade and investment figures are not encouraging, and we have to work together to increase them in a way that reflects the strength of the relations between the two friendly countries," he said.
In turn, Penny referred to the meeting, which reflects the common interest in the development of economic cooperation between the two countries pointing out "Our mission is mainly to increase exports and to set up frameworks to address the challenges resulting from Britain's exit from the European Union after Brexit, as well as supporting small and medium-sized British enterprises to create markets for them abroad".
He pointed out that "Britain will work in the coming period to sign trade agreements with countries based on the results of "Brexit", and in this framework, a bilateral agreement will be signed with Lebanon within this view."
