Unemployment rates in Jordan jumped to 18.5 percent in the third quarter of this year, compared with 15.8 percent as annually compared.
According to the Jordanian Department of Statistics, the unemployment rate among males was 15.4 percent, compared to 30 percent for females in the third quarter of this year, while unemployment among university degrees’ holders was 23.2 percent. Noting that the unemployment rate was 15 percent at the end of last year, compared with 13 percent the year before.
Jordan, which imports more than 90 percent of its energy needs from abroad, suffers from difficult economic conditions and debts. It was also greatly affected by the ongoing crises in both Iraq and Syria, particularly the refugee’s crisis. The government promised in 2016 to provide about 200 thousand jobs for Syrian refugees in the coming years, but this was linked to the receipt of financial grants from foreign countries.
The World Bank has warned of a deterioration in confidence between the youth and the Jordanian government, due to lack of employment opportunities and poor quality of services.
