The World Bank's new Poverty, Prosperity, and Planet report shows that eradicating poverty as defined for nearly half of the world's population – living on less than $6.85 a day – could take more than a century if work continues at the same slow pace as we see today. The report provides the first assessment of global progress toward eradicating poverty and boosting shared prosperity on a livable planet after the pandemic subsides.
The global goal of eradicating extreme poverty – set at $2.15 per person per day – by 2030 is out of reach, at which it could take three decades or more to eradicate poverty, mainly for low-income countries. Nearly 700 million people – 8.5% of the world's population – live on less than $2.15 a day today, and 7.3% of the population is expected to live in extreme poverty in 2030.
