Iraq’s Ministry of Planning announced the approval of its third national strategy to combat poverty, which remains a major challenge for the government. The new plan aims to reduce poverty levels to below 10% by 2029.
Iraq’s high poverty rates are largely attributed to the country’s prolonged instability and lack of serious policy measures by successive governments. UNICEF has warned of the impact of poverty on Iraqi children, stressing the need to create a protective and inclusive environment—particularly as children represent the majority of the 4.5 million Iraqis vulnerable to poverty due to conflict.
Iraq had previously adopted two anti-poverty strategies for 2010–2014 and 2018–2022.
