King Hamad Youth Empowerment Award to Achieve the SDGs

This award is considered the first global award of its kind, and it is an expression of the belief of the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, in the talent of the youth to lead their countries and the world towards a better-shared future of peace and prosperity, within the framework of achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The award recognizes the endeavors of young people to be active and productive citizens, contributing to the well-being of their societies and environment, as well as institutions working to improve the enabling environment and infrastructure for youth to make an impact in all UN member states.

The Kingdom of Bahrain believes that investing in the capabilities, energies and creativity of young people will achieve the best returns for the sustainable development and future prosperity of any country. For this reason, the Kingdom gives priority at the national level to pioneering initiatives that help young people to enhance their capabilities through training, skills-building, exchange of experiences, and expand their opportunities to choose the future they desire and contribute to the well-being of their lives.

The Kingdom of Bahrain also offers a set of initiatives in the field of youth empowerment and skills development stemming from the Kingdom's great belief in youth as an engine for development processes and development goals. It also continues to invest in youth because for being the best opportunity in the world to achieve the vision of Agenda 2030 and fulfill the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals of leaving no one behind, in a more equitable and free world.

The award was launched for the first time during the Youth Forum of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, in January 2017, and the award ceremony was held in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in January 2018. As of the 2018 award cycle, the King Hamad Award for Empowering Youth to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals includes two main categories, consisting of five sub-awards for youth work, and three sub-awards for the youth supporter category.

Within its two categories, this year's edition of the award will specifically look at youth-led actions that empower youth and help them mitigate the immediate, medium and long-term impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, as the outbreak of the pandemic has caused chaos around the world, which has deeply affected people's health, livelihoods and future prospects, and in some cases, and reflected the gains made in the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.
