Britain's long-term government borrowing costs are at their highest level since 1998, adding to the challenges facing Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who plans to borrow hundreds of billions of pounds to fund increased public investment and spending.

The U.K.'s Debt Management Office sold 2.25 billion pounds ($2.8 billion) of benchmark 30-year Treasuries to investors with an average yield of 5.198 percent at an auction on Tuesday, the highest yield for a 30-year Treasuries since the DMO sold a 5.790 percent bond in its first auction in May 1998.
