A report by the World Bank shows that droughts in light of climate change are becoming more frequent, intense, and widespread, affecting about 70 million people on average every year, putting economies, livelihoods, and lives at risk.
Saroj Kumar Jha, World Bank Group Global Director of the Water Practice explained that drought directly impacts water resources and causes a shortage of human capital, leading to long-term economic and social repercussions.
Drought in some regions has increased by up to 230 percent in the past 50 years, as the impact of climate change is exacerbating this phenomenon, and by 2050 drought is expected to have a significant impact on half of the world's population.
