The Ministries of Energy of Greece and Cyprus have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to move forward with a subsea power interconnection line project to connect the European continent with the Eastern Mediterranean.

The so-called "Great Maritime Interconnection" project aims to connect Europe's electricity transmission networks to Cyprus and costs 1.9 billion euros ($2.12 billion), and will be extended to Israel later.

When completed, the interconnection line will be the "longest in the world" at such a high voltage, with a length of 1240 kilometers, and the deepest will also be three thousand meters below the surface of the water.
