Oil futures on Wednesday climbed more than 1 percent from seven-week lows after the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas' political bureau, in Iran, triggering tensions in the Middle East. However, prices remained under pressure from concerns about weak demand in China.

Brent crude futures rose $1.17 a barrel, or 1.5 percent, to $79.80 a barrel before expiring on Wednesday. The most active October/October contracts were at $79.18, up $1.11.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose $1.15 a barrel, or 1.5 percent, to $75.88 a barrel.
