Brazil has put a free trade agreement into effect with the Palestinian Authority, which has been awaiting ratification for more than a decade, in a move aimed at demonstrating support for the Palestinian people.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that the agreement represents a concrete contribution to the establishment of an economically viable Palestinian State that can live in peace with its neighbors. Brazil, which recognizes a Palestinian state and allowed a Palestinian embassy to be set up in the Brazilian capital in 2010, ratified the deal, signed by the South American trading bloc Mercosur and the Palestinian Authority in 2011.

It is not yet clear whether other members of the bloc will follow Brazil's example. The Argentine government headed by Javier Mele is not expected to do so.
