China's consumer prices contracted for the fourth consecutive month and at the fastest pace since 2009 in January, reflecting continued challenges to demand in China, the world's second-largest economy. According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the consumer price index fell 0.8 percent year-on-year, compared to a 0.3 percent decline in December.
On the other hand, the index rose 0.3 percent month-on-month, versus an increase of about 0.1 percent in December. Food prices fell 5.9 percent year-on-year in the first months of this year.
