The Qatari merchandise trade balance, which represents the difference between total exports and imports, achieved a surplus of 13.5 billion riyals during the month of January 2021, registering an increase of 1.1 billion riyals, or 8.7 percent, compared to the same month of the previous year 2020, and achieved an increase of 4.9 billion riyals, almost 57 percent compared to December 2020.
According to the Planning and Statistics Authority, the value of total Qatari exports, which include exports of local origin and re-exports, amounted to approximately 21.3 billion riyals, a decrease of 4.7 percent compared to January 2020, and an increase of 24.3 percent compared to December 2020.
On the other hand, the value of merchandise imports decreased during January 2021, to reach about 7.8 billion riyals, a decrease of 21.5 percent compared to January 2020, and a decrease of 9.2 percent compared to December 2020.
In terms of exports, according to the main destination countries, China ranked first with a value of approximately 4.6 billion riyals, or 21.5 percent of the total value of Qatari exports, followed by Japan with a value of approximately 3.6 billion riyals, or 16.9 percent of the total value of exports, and then South Korea with a value of approximately 3.2 billion riyals, by 14.9 percent.
