U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant revealed that the ongoing government shutdown, now in its second week, is costing the U.S. economy around $15 billion per day in lost output. He urged Democrats to "be heroes" and cooperate with Republicans to end the shutdown.

Besant explained that “the impact of the shutdown has started to affect the U.S. economy’s performance, and we believe the shutdown may cost the economy up to $15 billion per day.”

He added that the wave of investments flowing into the U.S. economy — including in the field of artificial intelligence — is still in its early stages and has sustainable momentum, but the government shutdown is becoming an increasing obstacle to that progress.
