Global renewable energy production capacity has recorded unprecedented growth over the past year, but progress remains short of expectations to meet the 2030 target, according to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Renewables accounted for 92.5 percent of new energy production capacity in 2024, equivalent to 585 gigawatts, representing an unprecedented increase of 15.1 percent, bringing the total renewable energy production capacity to 4,448 gigawatts. However, progress still falls short of the 11.2 terawatts needed to meet Paris climate agreement pledges and the global target of tripling renewable capacity by 2030, requiring an annual growth rate of 16.6 percent.
