Climate change caused by carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere will reduce global GDP in 2050 by about $38 trillion, or about 20 percent, regardless of the strength of humanity's efforts to reduce carbon pollution, a study shows.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible remains essential to avoid further devastating economic consequences after 2050.

The study shows that the economic fallout from climate change could increase by tens of trillions of dollars annually by 2100 if the planet's temperature rises significantly by more than two degrees Celsius above levels recorded in the mid-nineteenth century.
