Argentina's budget in January posted its first surplus in nearly 12 years. New President Javier Milley continues to push for spending cuts. January was Milley's first full month in power after taking office in December. It ended with a positive public sector fiscal budget with a surplus of $589 million at the official exchange rate, and the figure includes the payment of interest on public debt.

The Ministry of Economy revealed that this fiscal surplus (monthly) is the first since August 2012 and the first surplus in January since 2011.

Milley is negotiating with the International Monetary Fund over his country's $44 billion loan and has pledged to balance public finances this year.
