Mauritania is poised to become one of Africa's most important gas hubs, as it prepares to sell its first cargo next year, making it one of the new players in the industry's club globally.

President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al-Ghazouani pointed out during the activities of the climate conference (COP28) currently being held in Dubai that “Mauritania has large gas resources exceeding 100 trillion cubic feet, and Mauritania also has large resources of renewable energies such as sun and wind, which can be developed immediately, to produce green hydrogen, especially in the northwestern regions, as it is also an important mining area, especially for iron production.”

Mauritania's accession to a long list of major gas producers comes at a time when the need for this resource is increasing, especially from European markets, which have moved far away from Russian gas due to the war in Ukraine.
