Unemployment in Morocco Jumps to 12.8%

The figures issued by the High Commissioner for Planning on Employment and Unemployment revealed a high unemployment rate in Morocco, as the industrial sector lost thousands of job opportunities, raising the number of job seekers in the Kingdom to 1.60 million.

The unemployment rate rose to 12.8 percent in the second quarter of this year, compared to 12.3 percent during the same period last year. However, this rate appears to be higher in cities, as it jumped from 15.6 percent to 18.2 percent, while it decreased in rural areas from 7.2 percent to 4.8 percent.

According to the data of the commission, the volume of unemployment increased by 120,000 between the second quarter of 2021 and the same period of 2020, bringing the number of unemployed people to 1.60 million, after it was in the range of 1.48 million. The unemployment rate among women increased from 15.6 to 15.9 percent, while it decreased among men aged between 15 and 24 years from 33.4 percent to 30.8 percent. The unemployment rate continued to rise among young degree holders from 18.2 percent to 20.4 percent, but it rose among high-level degree holders from 22.3 to 25.3 percent.
