The Palestinian government expected that the fiscal deficit of the general budget in 2021 will reach one billion dollars, in light of seeking to bridge this gap.
The Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh stated in a speech at the beginning of the weekly meeting of the Palestinian government, held in Ramallah, that "President Mahmoud Abbas's approval of the budget will take place after the cabinet conducts discussion for the third and final time, amid expectations of a deficit gap of about one billion dollars," and that the government will do everything it can to bridge this gap, through structural, administrative and financial reforms.
Shtayyeh noted the implementation of the strategic plan for tax revenues for the period 2021-2025, which mainly focuses on combating tax evasion, avoiding taxes, expanding the tax base horizontally, and not increasing the tax burden on citizens.
He also pointed out that "the 2021 budget reflects the general directions of the government included in the national policy agenda and the sustainable development goals, taking into account the flexibility and feasibility, according to cash flows and the government's priorities in spending, which will mainly focus on health and education issues as well as support for the poor."
