The inflation rate in Sudan has exceeded 300 percent, which poses great challenges for the new government concerned with dealing with an economic crisis that has recently caused popular protests.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the annual rate of change (inflation) recorded 304.22 percent in January 2021, compared to 269.33 percent in December 2020.

The Central Agency stated that the rise and increase in food prices led to demonstrations in different parts of the country. It also disclosed that the increase in these rates is a result of inflation of consumer goods prices, in all states during the past month, as the Red Sea State, eastern Sudan, recorded the highest increase at a rate of 70.75 points, while the Nile River State, in the north, recorded the lowest rate of 2.64 points.

A new government has been formed in Sudan, whose mission is to revive the economy, which for decades has been suffering under the weight of US sanctions, mismanagement and civil wars. In the government, the finance and economy portfolio was assumed by Gabriel Ibrahim, one of the leaders of the armed movements that were fighting the Bashir government in the western Darfur region.
