Tourism revenues in Tunisia rose 43 percent year-on-year in the first five months of this year to 1.55 billion dinars ($509 million).
According to the data issued by the Central Bank of Tunisia, the number of tourists reached 2.7 million during the period from January to the end of May, compared with 2.5 million tourists in the same period last year 2018, representing an increase of 8%.
The data showed that the rise in revenues and the increase in the number of expatriates is due to the decrease of the Tunisian dinar by 15.7 percent against the US dollar and by 9 percent against the euro between the end of May 2018 and the end of the same month of this year.
Tunisia received about 8.3 million tourists last year, with revenues of 1.36 billion dollars, while the Ministry of Tourism expects to exceed the 9 million tourist by the end of 2019. Tunisia is aiming to reach 10 million tourists in the coming year, after the recovery of the tourism sector in light of lifting the travel ban, imposed by many countries in 2015.
