Job opportunities in the United States fell in October to a two-and-a-half-year low, a sign that the labor market may be slowing down.

New jobs totaled 8.73 million at the end of October, down 617,000, or 6.6 percent. The figure was well below the Dow Jones' estimate of 9.4 million, as well as the lowest since March 2021.

While job opportunities fell dramatically, total hires fell only, while layoffs and separations were modestly higher. Quitting, seen as a measure of workers' confidence in the ability to change jobs and find another easily, has not changed much.
