Japan welcomed more than two million visitors for the third consecutive month in August, recovering more than 80 percent from pre-COVID-19 levels for the first time, data from Japan's National Tourism Organization showed.

The data showed that the number of foreign visitors coming for business and leisure reached 2.16 million last month. Visitors reached 85.6 per cent of 2019 levels before the pandemic led to travel restrictions around the world.

Revised GDP data showed capital spending and private consumption fell in the April-June period, highlighting the fragile state of Japan's economy, which is already facing headwinds from weak economic growth in the U.S. and China.
