The data of the Travel and Tourism Development Index issued by the World Economic Forum revealed that the State of Qatar is among the top five Arab tourist destinations for the year 2021, it was ranked third in the Arab world and forty-third globally, while the UAE ranked first in the Arab world and twenty-five globally. Saudi Arabia ranks second in the Arab world and thirty-third globally, and Egypt ranks fourth in the Arab world and fifty-first globally.
The tourism sector in Qatar continues to recover from the repercussions of Corona, as the number of visitors and arrivals to the country jumped during the month of May by 869 percent on an annual basis. According to the monthly statistics issued by the Planning and Statistics Authority, the number of visitors to Qatar last May reached 166.09 thousand, compared to 17.14 thousand visitors for the same month in 2021.
The tourism sector in Qatar is expected to achieve a major leap with the support of hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup as the first country in the Middle East. The tournament will be the strongest promotional and marketing campaign for tourism in Qatar. Hotels, tourist resorts and commercial centers have been able to achieve a leap in their results during the past two years, despite the challenges imposed by the pandemic. The great facilities provided by the concerned authorities in Qatar have contributed to the revitalization of tourism and travel.
