A report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and ESCWA, entitled "Regional Overview of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the Near East and North Africa 2023", showed that the number of undernourished people in the region reached 59.8 million in 2022, representing 12.9 percent of the population, far exceeding the global average of 9.2 percent. This figure represents a 75.9 percent increase since 2000.

The prevalence of hunger was highest in low-income countries and least-developed Arab countries, where almost a third of the population suffers from hunger. Undernourishment rates in countries in conflict were about 4 times higher than in non-conflict countries.
