A report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) shows that a third of the world's population in 2023 is still without access to the Internet, despite the number of people currently connected to the network at an all-time high. According to the report, since the last ITU census in 2022, nearly 100 million additional people have access to the Internet, but 2.6 billion people are still deprived of it. 67 percent of the world's population, or 5.4 billion people, are now online.

ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin noted, "This progress in connectivity represents another step in the right direction, although it is not happening fast enough, and there is a need to continue efforts to achieve universal and effective connectivity by 2030."
